Do you know the song “Here is the beehive”? Trust me- I do! 😆 I had to listen to it innumerable times since Alex studied bees in school and became an expert on beedom. No wonder he was incredibly excited when we promised we’d go see real bees!

The Hatta Honey Bee Discovery Center is tucked away in the Hatta mountains, 10 minutes from the famous dam. It’s small but a visit your kids will remember.

The funniest part without any doubt is wearing beekeeping suits. We were visiting the place with friends and it took us a while to get all the kids dressed, and then to get them to behave. They looked like little, euphoric astronauts – priceless! 😂

Our guide took us outside and showed us local trees the bees like and different beehive types, and then we finally got to meet the bees! At this point everyone including the littlest were fascinated. The air buzzing around us, we spotted the queen and even saw a young bee emerging from her cell for the first time. It was so impressive none of the children even thought about getting scared.

The visit took around 30 minutes and we all ended up buying honey from “our” bees from the gift shop. We combined it with a trip to the dam in the afternoon, and despite being a 2 hour drive from Dubai it didn’t feel too long – a perfect weekend roadtrip 🙌

The Honey Bee Garden Discovery Center currently operates at 30% capacity, and although we couldn’t book in advance we didn’t have to wait long for our turn. Beekeeping suits are handed out clean and after wearing go straight into a laundry bin. If you come in wearing long pants / jeans they will only give you a jacket with attached hat, unless you ask for a suit like I did (I couldn’t help it 😂). There is a coffee shop and a playground outside which helps with waiting times if any 💫

The tour costs 50 dhs/ adult and 30 dhs/child.
