If there is one pavilion worth a visit at Expo2020, it's the German pavilion!
If there is one pavilion worth a visit at Expo2020, it's the German pavilion!
Am I biased? Probably. But- if you've seen the German pavilion, you've seen some of the best things the Expo2020 has to offer!
I had read about this pavilion on my German mums' Whatsapp group and it was the first I headed to last Saturday. Queues can be long during the day but if you head there first thing in the morning, you won't wait 🤞.
The pavilion, called "Campus Germany", is conceived like a university, based on Germany's long university tradition. You first have to register as a student and are asked for your name, spoken language and nationality. You're then given a lanyard with a card and a microchip. Kids don't necessarily need one but needless to say mine were very excited to get theirs!
The visit starts with a show about our planet and our life on it. After this introduction, the doors open and the visitor is invited to explore 100 000 ideas for a more sustainable future. The ideas are symbolised by yellow balls in a giant ball pit.
It's definitely the best indoor play area for kids at the Expo!
Adults are invited in as well, or can learn quick facts about sustainability at one of several stations. Thanks to the registration card, the visitor is identified by his name and preferred language. Whenever he puts a yellow ball into the designated hole, a short video about sustainability is played. The facts are short and entertaining, and you'll be sure to learn something! It's been almost a week since I was there but I still remember some facts, for example that there is a German law from the 18th century which states that not more trees can be cut than can be grown at the same time.
You're allowed to stay as long as you want in this area and if you have kids, I promise it will be challenging to motivate them to move on to the next room - the Energy Lab.
The main theme here is energy, from wind...
...to waves.
In the adjacent Future City lab, the visitor is invited to discover solutions to a more sustainable urban life.
These range from urban gardening over high speed elevators to recycled building materials.
Besides screens which recognize the visitor and display concise information in his chosen language...
...there are many interactive hands-on activities in general inviting people explore, for example a gravity game...
or a station about energy storage.
The visitor is then invited to reflect on nature...
...because nature is the biggest inspiration we should look at to continue our life on the planet...
...and connecting with it and studying nature can tell us more about the present and also future solutions.
Throughout the exhibition little nooks invite the little ones to explore and play...
The biggest surprise though awaits at the exit! The visitor is guided into a dark room where the names of the present persons is displayed...
...then the show begins! I won't tell you more about it, you will have to experience it yourself!
All I can say is that it's mysterious and magical...
The main message is that we humans have to work together for a better future.
The tour of the pavilion ends with a graduation party where the students are invited to dance.
It's great to entertain the kids while the parents have a bite or drink at the restaurant!
Although the food options can probably only be appreciated by Germans and alike...
... it's a nice place for a snack or afternoon coffee- it's the first time I find a typical German "Eiskaffee" in Dubai, which is an iced coffee with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream!
As most of us probably I haven't seen all pavilions but needless to say I spent a long time in the German pavilion and was literally blown away by its interactive aspects, the attention to detail and the educational value! It has something to offer for the entire family, no matter the age of the visitors and I believe it is one of the highlights of the expo everyone should have seen. I promise you won't regret it, just make sure to go early or use Smart Queue to book your appointment in advance. Enjoy!
