Eid mubarak! ✨
These cookies are easy to make, inexpensive and will keep your kids busy for a while!
You may remember my dad is Tunisian... my mum is German and has been living in Tunisia for more than 40 years. Every eid she makes German christmas cookies and gifts them to friends and family and they're always very popular since they're a change to the traditional eid sweets people gift each other.
I'm keeping the tradition alive with my kids and this is our favourite recipe. It's perfect for Dubai - it doesn't stick and you can roll out the dough easily even when it's hot. And it can literally be used over hours so if your kids take their time to cut out shapes it won't stick and make a mess. Just make sure to knead it very well as it can crumble at first. It can be used immediately, refrigerated for later use or even be frozen.
Ingredients:
500g flour
1 tsp baking powder
200g butter
250g sugar
1 packet vanilla sugar or real vanilla extract
2 eggs
Knead well until you get a homogeneous dough, roll into a ball and use immediately or let rest in the fridge for half an hour until it's cold. You can even make larger batches and freeze them for the next time!
Roll out the dough and cut out shapes.
I bought this cookie cutter years ago from Tchibo but I must confess I don't use it often - it's such a hassle to change the message it's become a permanent eid cookie cutter 😂
Bake the cookies for 8-12 minutes at 200 degrees, let them cool down and decorate with chocolate or sugar glaze made with icing sugar and lemon juice. You can leave them as they are, add food colouring and / or sprinkles.
I put the cookies in small bags from Daiso and gift them to relatives. Total cost less than 20 dhs for a hundred cookies 💁🏽♀️
